Announcements

Latest: From December 27-30, 2011, Thomas Taylor, Forrest Marler and Wayne Sampson went to Dallas and participated in the 2011 Pan-Am Class Championships. Forrest played in the U1600 Section and went 2.5-3.5 (+2 -3 =1). Thomas and Wayne played in the U1200 Section which was combined with the U1400 and U1000 Sections. So in actuality, they played in the larger U1400 Section. Thomas went 3-3 (+2 -2 =2) and won $15.50. Wayne went 0-3 and withdrew early.

On Saturday, July 9, 2011, several members played in Round Rock at the Austin Kids #20. In the Open Section, Dannie Mendoza went 2-1 and tied for 4th place, Charles Haring went 1.5-1.5 and Duane Herrera went 0.5-2.5. In the U1400 Section, Costas Paizanis tied for 2nd with a score of 3-1, David Lemper went 2-2 and Thomas Taylor went 1.5-2.5. In the U900 Section, Roshan Vishwanath went 3-2 and tied for 5th place. Michael Paizanis went 2-3, Elaina Herrea went 1.5-3.5 and R.J. Cabla went 1-4. Congrats to all our players.

Over the weekend of June 25-26, 2011, Dannie Mendoza and Forrest Marler played in the San Antonio City Championship. Dannie went 3-2 with wins over 2 "B" players and an "A" player. His only losses were to two Experts and Dannie ended up tied for First Place in the U1400/Unrated Section. He and 2 others in this section actually outscored everyone in the U1600 Section as well. Forrest came away with a perfect 5-0 score. That's 5 losses and no wins or draws and took solid command of dead last. Oh well, life goes on. I did make 5 other people very happy this weekend.

On Saturday, March 19, 2011, the Temple CC played a friendly team match against the Waco CC. It was an unrated 2, round match. Most of our players had not played outside of our club, so we were outmatched and outrated, BUT we had the team spirit. Waco won with a score of 12.5 - 3.5. They took possession of a traveling trophy (which we hope to reclaim at some future date). The Temple team consisted of Nathan Fewel, Forrest Marler, Chris Werner, Bill Morreall, Thomas Taylor, Chris Boulette, Jason Hesser, and Heather Boulette.

Over the weekend of March 11-13, 2011, Nathan Fewel played in the South Houston Open. Nathan played in the Under 2000 Section and took clear Second with 4 of 5 points, scoring 3 wins, 1 draw and a half point bye in the last round. Congratulations to Nathan.

Our first big tournament was held on January 22, 2011. There were a total of 28 players in 2 sections. Matthew Liu of Austin and Mack Williams of Arlington won the Open Section with a score of 3-0. Nathan Fewel of Temple took 3rd with a score of 2.5-0.5 In the Reserve Section, Steve Manion of San Marcos took 1st Place with a 3-0 score while Gary Cobb and Dang Minh Nguyen, both of Austin, tied for 2nd with 2-1 scores.

On January 7-9, 2011, Wayne Sampson, Duane Herrera, and Forrest Marler traveled to Austin to play in the 1st Austin City Chess Championships. Duane won $50 for tying for 1st place (U1300) with 4 points. Forrest won a chess set and chess book for having the best game (U1500).

Over the weekend of October 1-3, 2010, Wayne Sampson and Forrest Marler both competed in the US Class Championships in Houston. Wayne and Forrest both tied for Third place in the Class E tournament with a score of 3.5 out of 5. Forrest was in clear Second going into the last round. He got an advantage in the game but had to give up a piece to avoid mate and eventually lost the game. Wayne had one of the most amazing draws in Round 5 that anyone had seen in a long time. Come by and ask him to show you the game.

Over the Labor Day 2011 weekend, Thomas Taylor, Wayne Sampson and Forrest Marler played in the 77th Southwest Open held in Dallas. Thomas and Wayne played in the Novice Section and Forrest played in the Reserve Section. Wayne scored an impressive 4 - 3 (+3 -2 =2) while Thomas scored 1.5 - 5.5 (+1 -5 =1). Forrest scored 2.5 - 4.5 (+2 -4 =1). All in all, a very succesful tournament for us all.

On August 6, 2011, we held our Temple Summer Swiss. The Open Section ended in a 3 way tie for First Place with a 3-0 score by Nathan Fewel, Nam Nguyen, and Matthew Liu. The Reserve Section ended in a 4 way tie for First Place with a 2.5-0.5 score between Russell Gardner, William Morreall, Mike Detchevery, and Pierce Lai. There were a total of 42 players in both sections.

Over Sept 30-Oct 2 2011, Nathan Fewel and Thomas Taylor traveled to Houston to play in the 2011 US Class Championship. Thomas went 2.5 - 2.5 (+2 -2 =1) in Class E. Nathan played up into the Expert Class and went 2-3 (+1 -2 =2).  Forrest Marler was the Chief Assistant TD which helped him along the path to a National TD certification.
